Yeah yeah… I know, I probably sound like a hypocrite… drinking my Bulletproof coffee concoctions and then tell you to quit coffee. You know the saying, “Do as I say, not as I do.” 😀
After going 14 days without coffee, I did another stint of 4 weeks and 3 days… I never felt better! Then I went to Europe and then came back home and started drinking Bulletproof coffee as my breakfast / pre-workout before the gym!
Today, I’m going to give you 5 reasons why you SHOULD detox from coffee… I’m not telling you to never ever drink it again. Just do this detox to reset your body so you can see how you feel without it.
Before we begin, we need to establish that CAFFEINE is a drug, okay? It’s a stimulant, makes you feel alert and wide awake and probably a better version of yourself (but in the worst possible way) – just like COCAINE. After the effects of caffeine wear of it, you get a crash and you will want another hit of it. JUST LIKE COCAINE.
Of course, Cocaine is far worse in terms of being addictive. In saying that, Caffeine is still not great either. When you don’t get your fix, you might get a headache, feel jittery, or just be craving it and you won’t stop until you get your fix. Sounds almost like a drug-addict… And there are those that are against such illicit substances and they drink coffee like no tomorrow.
According to Wikipedia, Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid. It is derived from a natural pesticide found in some plants. Over time, it became known as a drug after people discovered it’s stimulating side effects.
The reasons I’m going to list will also apply to those that drink COKE & RED BULL and also every other energy drink out there as they are high in caffeine (not to mean, sugar too!).
5 Reasons Why You Should Detox from Coffee
Caffeine is a drug & pesticide | I think we’ve already established this bit above… Let’s do this detox, okay?
Caffeine creates stress on the body | Caffeine releases the stress hormone, cortisol, into the body from the adrenal glands. Which in turn gets the adrenaline going. This means that your body is in “fight or flight” mode. If you drink 3 to 10 cups of coffee a day, every day… eventually, your cortisol levels are going to be so low that you will feel like crap. Caffeine overstimulates the body and over time, the adrenals become exhausted. This can lead to Adrenal Fatigue.
Adrenal Fatigue may lead to hormonal imbalances and for women, the inability to fall pregnant easily or inability to carry a baby to full-term (ie. miscarriages).
Caffeine produces poor quality sleep | Do you drink coffee every day, still able to sleep okay, however you wake up not as refreshed as you should? You should thank the caffeine for reducing REM sleep – this is the deep sleep where you dream and your mind to do some emotional processing.
It’s really a vicious cycle… you grab your usual morning cuppa, feel sleepy during the day, go to sleep and wake up tired. Repeat.
Caffeine can cause birth defects & issues to newborn | This is kind of a no-brainer… if it was completely safe, then wouldn’t pregnant women be able to consume it freely? Consuming more than 200mg per day of caffeinated products has been linked to low birth weight and miscarriage. But they (being doctors & research) say it’s okay to consume no more than 200mg a day. Others say it’s safer to stay away from it. Which is it? Looks like no-one really knows…
Personally, I wouldn’t recommend for pregnant women to drink coffee at all during pregnancy – because of the effects it has on adults, imagine what it would do to a developing foetus. Really… use your common sense. Coffee will be there 9 months later.
Caffeine is addictive, changes your mood and gives you withdrawal symptoms | Sounds like a story of a drug addictive. If you think that having one cup every day without fail is okay, you could be mistaken. If your mood changes from happy happy joy joy (after you’ve had your coffee) to Mr or Mrs Grumpy Pants (after the coffee wears off), or if you can’t go ONE day without a coffee and when you do, you get a headache. I have news for you – you’re ADDICTED. I don’t care what anyone says… it’s the one trait of caffeine, just admit you’re addicted. Most people are in denial, but then again… most drug addicts are.
I’m not asking you go to cold turkey. If you usually have more than one coffee a day, reduce it to ONE a day and make it before noon. If you get drowsy and need a pick me up mid-afternoon, grab some nuts or some nice fruit to snack on. Or go for a walk.
If you only have one a day, cut it down to every other day. If your eating style is highly conventional and processed, try eating more real, wholefoods with protein, good fats and lots of veggies. This goes for ALL coffee drinkers. Caffeine also inhibits the absorption of a few key nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, iron & B vitamins.
You want to get to the stage where you don’t need to rely on this substance for energy.
Caffeine Free Herbal Teas!!! Just Health has a large selection… they also have free delivery if you spend over $150.
There’s also Chai, Dandy Tea (herbal coffee)… check out my post where I went without coffee for 14 days.

Time to love you and leave you, til next time 🙂
