I’m known as someone who sleeps a lot, in my family. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been teased for sleeping past 10 or 11am! It’s just always been that way, and no one can imagine me behaving differently.
Having been told that I have enlarged adenoids by an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) doctor when I was young, it was obvious that the reason for my tiredness was obstructive sleep apnoea. This is a condition where people stop breathing for small amounts of time while sleeping, and miss out on essential REM (deep) sleep that the body needs to rejuvenate overnight.
I was told that the only way to combat this was to have invasive nasal surgery to remove my adenoids, which may or may not work, and that my adenoids could still grow back. Wary of putting myself through the trauma of surgery, I decided to live with tiredness, crankiness and incessant teasing.
Until I came across Buteyko, a breathing re-training method developed by Russian doctor Konstantin Buteyko. I did a 5 day course that went for 2 hours a day, learning to breathe in a way that (counter-intuitively) reduced the amount of air that I took in. Apparently the whole problem is that I had been over-breathing!
At the end of that week of learning and practicing simple breathing exercises, I had the best sleep I have ever had in my life. I couldn’t believe it!
It was incredible – if this was how I should feel when I wake up after a night’s sleep, how could people be allowed to NOT know about this!! There was no crankiness, no tiredness, no need to spend an hour or two of zombie time before I felt human in the morning! 🙂
The Buteyko Method also relieves asthma symptoms – all I could think while I was doing the course was that maybe my dad wouldn’t have died from asthma related illness if he had had access to this technique.
So if you have asthma, or sleep apnoea or allergies, I urge and encourage you to check it out through Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health.
