Something that was shitting me off today is the lack of accountability. I’m so consumed by this lack of accountability, that I wanted to write about it.
What is accountability?
- The fact or condition of being accountable; responsibility.
- It is the quality or state of being accountable; especially : an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions
Lately, I have observed a lack of accountability in a certain organisation that I conduct business with from time to time.
It is almost like a culture; a certain demographic do not want to take responsibility for their work areas or do any work. All they want to do is pass the buck and blame others if things don’t get done.
So the organisation you work at may not be one that makes any money, but money still does come in and out (c’mon, otherwise how do you get paid?)… does that mean you still do nothing and plod along until you die?
Are people seriously happy to do this? Achieve nothing, make no difference and then leave the world knowing this?
Never in my life have I seen so many people in one place not care about anything they do. No pride in their work.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
There are no KPIs or any sort of performance management plan (PMP). No one way to tell if someone is performing poorly and thus, resources are wasted.
And another point, how can people move up or progress their careers? PMPs are crucial to this process.
Why am I bringing this up?
Being accountable for our actions is how we improve as individuals. It’s how we grow and succeed in life.
Having no accountability is like you don’t want to improve or succeed in life.
How can you get anywhere in life if you don’t do the work?
Personally, I think this is a reflection of themselves. If people behave like this in the workplace, surely their personal lives wouldn’t be that much different?
If you want to lose weight and get healthier – then you need to hold yourself accountable.
Being accountable for your actions is the key to success for anything you want to do.
But not everyone is like this…
There are a handful of people that want to make changes to this particular organisation, although it is very difficult due to the mindset.
Most of the people that want to better things are those that have worked in real-life companies that make money and results were expected of them.
The mindset and mentality is very old school. People don’t like change. But life is an ever-changing process. You get older, you have kids, your kids have kids, your hair goes gray, you put on weight, you don’t like it… and so forth. You are never ever in the same place at any given day.
Why do I care so much?
Because people should care, should give a fuck about what they do at work.
I’m here to make a difference. I’m not sure if anything I do is having an effect, but I won’t go without trying.
And this means empowering the people and making them accountable.
If I didn’t care so much, then I’d just be another person who just floats through life, getting by doing as little as possible.
If you are not happy with where you are at, then start taking responsibility. You can make the changes you want, you can do anything you want if you hold yourself accountable.
