Coffee… I’m going on about coffee AGAIN. You all know about my love hate relationship with coffee. Seriously, I love the taste and the smell of coffee. I don’t drink it for the caffeine hit. I drink it because of the taste and smell. The coffee aroma… is just too good to resist.
Of course, there’s also terrible coffee. Those shitty nespresso pod things. Don’t drink them. Life is too short to be drinking crap coffee.
But alas, as per my title above… WHY the hell should you reduce your coffee intake?
Numero Uno – Caffeine can wreak havoc on the adrenals!
The adrenals are two little glands that sit above the kidneys. Their job is to is to release hormones that trigger the fight-or-flight response when confronted with stressors. Drinking coffee stimulates the adrenals, tricking them into thinking there is some sort of crisis!
Over time, constant stimulation weakens the adrenals. Which will lead to adrenal fatigue. Then you will just feel tired ALL the FREAKING time.
Numero Due – Caffeine and Cortisol Connection
Cortisol is a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. If you have somewhat normal cortisol levels, your cortisol will naturally rise in the morning.
If you drink coffee first thing in the morning, caffeine stimulates the adrenal glands to increase cortisol release. The result is instantaneous – the feelings of being alert and awake. This is short-lived, as you will come crashing down and feel like poo again.
Numero Tre – Too much coffee dehydrates you.
So you end up with dry, wrinkled and saggy skin. Who wants that?
Constantly elevated cortisol levels result in dehydration and decreases the production of collagen and elastin in the skin.
Numero Quattro – Coffee is an acidic beverage.
This can worsen symptoms for those with existing digestion and heartburn problems.
Coffee may cause the stomach to produce excess hydrochloric acid (HCl). The stomach naturally produces this acid to aid digestion. The stomach can only produce a certain limit of HCl. Constant coffee usage will deplete the HCl and thin the gut lining.
Those with heartburn issues, caffeine is known to relax the esophageal sphincter. This muscle should remain closed after eating to prevent everything in your stomach from coming back up to the oesophagus and burning the lining with hydrochloric acid.
Numero Cinque – Coffee inhibits mineral absorption
That’s right. Especially iron! So if you think having a green smoothie with your coffee is going to boost your iron levels, you are wrong…
Oh damn… my fancy schmancy coffee pork and beef dishes won’t be of any benefit now! But damn, they taste bloody good 😛
But yes, if you are going to have caffeine, don’t have it with food that is high in iron. Coke and steak is a no no. All that iron gone to waste. Another useless combo is your iron-fortified cereal with coffee. I mean, really?
Numero Sei – Your body builds up a tolerance to caffeine…
Some people tell me that coffee doesn’t work on them anymore and they can sleep after drinking coffee. Guess what, you have built up a tolerance to caffeine! Meaning, you need more and more of it to work on you. Caffeine is a one helluva drug…
Having the same dose of caffeine everyday lessens the effects of caffeine rather quickly. Then you start to just feel normal. When you don’t have coffee, you experience the tiredness and fatigue way more than before you had that coffee fix.
What is the solution to reducing coffee intake?
- Slowly reduce the number of cups per day or week to avoid the headaches associated with caffeine withdrawal.
- Replace one coffee with something like Rooibos with a splash of cream and some beautiful jarrah honey 🙂 It’s rather nice.
- If at work and you feel like you need a coffee, take a walk outside and take a deep breath!
- Cold brew some decaf coffee and then use it to make a protein smoothie.
- Try matcha green tea… if you must, you can add a shot of coffee to it to make a dirty matcha.
- My personal favourite is chai latte. Wean yourself off with a cup of chai.
- Another one is replace coffee with exercise. Maybe do some pushups if you think of having a coffee.
Boys and girls, ladies and gentleman – I really hope this post has helped you out.
Have an awesome week,
